rua pā tournament at rawene primary school
15/11/17
Today the tamariki participated in the Rua Pā tournament held at Rawene Primary School. It was a fun event for our school and they had a blast playing and enjoying themselves on the field against all the schools that participated. Rua Pā is a modified game of Turbo touch where 5 players on each team aim to score points by putting the ball down over the try-line and there are no off-sides. Players can pass the ball backwards and forwards but no one player can be touched twice. If a player is touched twice by two opposing players before the ball is passed it results in a hand-over. If any player drops the ball it also results in a hand over. Dena Hemara from Patu Hokianga introduced the game to our school and spent 1hr every Wednesday and Thursday for the last 3 weeks teaching our tamariki the game. To cap it all off, a tournament was held where schools from Tautoro, Waima, Rawene, Kaikohe Intermediate and Omanaia each competed against each other. Each school had at least 2 teams and it was awesome watching everyone give it their best. |

2017 Kapa haka festivalOn Friday 10th November 2017, Omanaia hosted the 13th Annual Kapa Haka Festival o te Tonga o Hokianga for its first time at Omanaia school.
We were honored to host this awesome kaupapa. Our tamariki, whanau and hapu were so excited to hold the festival at Omanaia school and it was a great success for us all. Since its beginning, the kapa haka festival has been hosted by all of the schools in the South Hokianga. We were pleased to be given the mauri for our kura, whanau and hapu to prepare for this occasion. Our whanau did a wonderful job in ensuring that this festival would continue to carry on the manaakitanga that each school has had opportunity to show at each years event. |
Schools from Opononi (Te Kura Takiwa o Opononi), Horeke, Waima, Rawene and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o te Tonga o Hokianga came to participate in the event each bringing a teina and tuakana roopu to stand on stage to perform their brackets.

"I felt happy and the thing that I most enjoyed was everyone having fun and looking after one another"
Tuhikaiariki Smith
Tumuaki Jon Smith says " This was a neat opportunity for our Omanaia whanau to show the grandeur of our school and the special wairua that emanates from this kura when others visit. For us it is more than our tamariki performing in front of us, its about feeling the aroha and the mauri of Omanaia school. This school is a very special place. There were many people who came up to me saying, "wow, I've never been here before" or "I didn't know that there was even a school up here". These comments were reassuring statements that they were blown away by the ahua of our kura and especially the tamariki who are here"
A special moment for Omanaia school was the handing of the kohatu Mauri to Waima school. It was agreed by the tumuaki that because this is such an important kaupapa for our Hokianga whanau that we present a Mauri stone to be handed around each year for the handing over of the mauri. From that whakaaro, Carver Whiu Waata selected a kohatu from Araiteuru and carved it into a punga (anchor stone). Amy Bristow then weaved the taura through the stone and Rauati Ewens weaved the kete to house the kohatu. This was a treasured moment for us and a token of our appreciation for all our kura over the years and in the years to come. |
Our haka - Te Paiaka o te Riri - performed by our tane
Omanaia school would like to thank all the whanau, kura, community workers, kaiako, kaumatua and kuia for all their support for us in making this a successful event.
A special thank you also to our tutor. Matua Hirini Wikaira for his compositions and imparting his knowledge onto our tamariki and staff, without his time and aroha we would not be here. We are blessed to have waiata and haka written specifically for our kura and are proud to perform these on stage. Nga mihi nunui ki a koutou katoa. Next year: the festival will be held at Waima School. |
"Thank you whanau for your support that has come through for our school. Our day was enjoyable. Thanks to you guys"
